This note is from the Pickleball Committee to the Ocean Village community.
We are writing to raise awareness of a critical motion made on April 19,2022, at the Board of Directors’ workshop, to amend the prior proposal to build racquet sports courts in the field north of the new clubhouse. The motion is to build 1 asphalt tennis court in the field.
Prior compromise agreements between the Pickleball and Tennis Committees, at the request of the Board, formed a recommendation to build 8 pickleball courts in the North Field. Additionally, tennis courts 1 and 2, would be replaced with 1 soft surface court.
In November, 2021, the Board unanimously approved this joint recommendation.
Today, we are faced with increased opposition to this agreement, with much disinformation and misinterpretation of the facts being circulated in OV.
To address this, here are some key facts:
The new courts would be for OV players, just as our tennis courts are intended to be used.
We have several months of player registration data provided by Recreation booking software, supporting our request for additional courts to accommodate demand.
Any sound issues would be mitigated by the installation of appropriate sound barrier material, concealed by landscaping shrubbery, the cost for which is already budgeted in the Proctor Construction contract.
Placing pickleball courts in the North Field puts them the farthest possible distance from residences, and is a location where sound can be mitigated at or below ambient noise levels.
No lighting is contemplated for the courts.
There is no data to support a majority opposition to pickleball courts.
Please urgently send your feedback to the board members. Let them know that you support the Board of Directors’ December, 2021 vote to build a 120 foot by 120 foot racquet sport court in the North Field.
Thank you.
